Whilst in SA for the screening, Freya was delighted to do some work with the extraordinary Winnie Mabaso Foundation http://www.winniemabaso.org/ and its Founder and CEO Lisa Ashton. Freya has known Lisa for a while but never had the chance to be involved with the actual Foundation and this trip allowed her the chance to see just some of the amazing projects it is currently undertaking.
Filming with Johannesburg-based cameraman Dean Hibbert, who she worked with on the initial C.A.S.T. Project, the two of them got the opportunity to capture some of the work being undertaken in the SQUATTERS CAMP from several newly erected shacks, the library, a kids Sports day, members of Granny Club and the Friday night Feeding Station. Freya will produce several short films for the website and is working with Lisa on ideas for her next trip.
HOW? LUCKY SCREENS IN FINETOWN
Last week Freya finally screened HOW? LUCKY to the township community in the Finetown Multipurpose Building, where the film was shot. Ahead of the screening, posters were pinned up at the STOP sign, a central crossroads in the township which features heavily throughout the film. On the day, a huge screen, speakers and mic were all set up in the space as were trestle tables with hotdogs and water for the guests and an original HOW? LUCKY t-shirt for signing. ‘Africa-time’ meant the film started later than intended but to a good mix of audience-members, several of whom appear in the film. Lucky introduced the film along with a few words from Freya.
NAHEMI’s ( National Association of Higher Education in the Moving Image )
As part of NAHEMI’s ( National Association of Higher Education in the Moving Image ) TALKING SHOP CONFERENCE - Freya presented her Film Production Assault Course. Using the ideas she developed for the ANTF Symposium earlier this year, she is continuing to develop the project with a view to ultimately writing and presenting a paper.
Freya is on the Executive Board for NAHEMI and heading up their Festivals presentation of student work at both Encounters and Aesthetica Film festivals this year.
INTERNATIONAL FILMMAKING ACADEMY / CINEMA RITROVATO - BOLOGNA
Cinema Ritrovato is one of the most magical film festivals in the world and it was a great chance for Freya to watch several classic films under the stars whilst catching up with fellow filmmakers from around the world.
